Plaza Semanggi

The project is located in Central Jakarta on a 2.25 hectare piece of land. The greatest challenge in preparing the structural design and carrying out the construction of this project was to build a new 12 storey building with three layers of basement while still had to preserve two on-site existing buildings, namely the Granada Office Building and Balai Sarbini, where great art performances usually take place. These two preserved buildings were built in 1970s with no basement.
In order to secure the foundations of these two existing buildings during the 8-meter depth excavation for constructing the new basements, circular post-tensioned prestressed beams were designed and constructed to encircle the group of bore piles of each existing building.  The structural design and construction of these circular post-tensioned-prestressed beams were inspired by wine barrel made of wooden panels.
